Tots in Tents: Camping with Toddlers

Camping with those little bundles of joy known as toddlers can be quite the adventure! But fear not, for we have some wisdom to share that will ensure a memorable and delightful experience for the entire family. Now, let's dive in and discover how we can conquer the wilderness with our pint-sized explorers!

Number one on our list is to select a campground that caters to families with young children. Look for a place that offers amenities designed to keep those little adventurers entertained and safe. A playground, gentle hiking trails, and nearby restrooms and water sources will be your allies in this wild endeavor. Don’t know where to start to find such a spot? That’s okay we are constantly on the hunt ourselves but to kick things off we normally start with a search on Hipcamp.

Now, timing is everything. Consider the age and disposition of your toddlers when planning your camping escapade. Start with a shorter trip to gauge their response to the great outdoors. Choose a time of year when the weather is kind and the bugs are scarce. Typically, that means you’ll want to aim for late summer/early fall or late spring. Comfort is key!

Next up, it's time to set up camp. Find a spot that is level and far from any treacherous cliffs, bodies of water, or suspicious flora. A spacious tent that accommodates the entire family is a wise choice. Here is our tried and true tent with integrated lighting form CORE Equipment. If tent campaign isn’t your thing think about renting an RV of sorts from Outdoorsy. If the rig of your choosing isn’t drivable and you don’t have the ability to tow you can usually have your rig delivered directly to your camping spot. Now that you have shelter don't forget to bring along a portable crib or playpen to ensure a cozy sleeping den for your little one. We also love to use our SlumberPod to keep naps and bed times on schedule regardless of how light it is outside of the tent.

Now, let's not leave home without the essentials, shall we? Pack all the necessary supplies for your toddler's well-being, from diapers and wipes to extra clothes, blankets, and a sleeping bag, we absolutely love Morrison Outdoors Big Mo 40 (see photo above). And don’t overlook the importance of suitable footwear. Oh, and be sure to bring along their favorite comfort items or toys to provide that extra touch of security and entertainment.

Ah, the ever-changing weather! Be prepared by packing clothes suitable for all the elements you may encounter. Layering is the secret to ensuring your toddler's comfort throughout the day and night. And don't forget the rain gear, sunscreen, hats, and bug repellent to shield those precious little souls from nature's whims. Don’t like the idea of spraying your kids with bug repellent? Either do we that’s why we always care our Thermacell MR300.

Safety first! Take the time to childproof your campsite. Keep any dangerous objects out of reach, secure those campfire areas, and use baby gates or playpens to create a haven of safety for your curious explorer.

Routine is the name of the game for toddlers and camping is no reason to break it. Do your best to maintain their regular schedule while out in the wilderness. Stick to their usual mealtimes, nap times, and bedtime routines to provide them with a sense of security amidst the unfamiliar surroundings.

Now, let's talk entertainment! Plan activities and games that are tailored to their little hearts and minds. Nature walks, scavenger hunts, storytelling, and simple crafts will keep their curiosity piqued and their smiles wide. And don't forget to bring along their favorite books and toys to sprinkle a touch of familiarity into their outdoor adventure.

Ah, the great outdoors! Encourage your little ones to embrace nature's wonders. Let them touch the leaves, feel the textures of rocks and sticks, and observe the insects and critters from a safe distance, of course. Teach them about the environment, and foster within them a deep appreciation for the natural world.

Lastly, be flexible and patient. Camping with toddlers is an unpredictable journey, but the rewards are immeasurable. Keep that positive attitude, adjust your plans as needed, and remember that the true goal here is to create lasting memories and cherish those precious moments spent together as a family.

By following these guidelines you are well on your way to a successful camping experience with your toddlers. Prioritize their safety, comfort, and enjoyment, and embrace the grand adventure of exploring – simply put – adventure all day and sleep all night!
